Take your website to the next level-Tell your story

Since the days of shamen and caves, storytellers have been an integral part of our lives. From the Ancient Greek epics to the latest novels, stories connect the past with the present. As human beings we love stories and hearing them is something humankind has never grown out of. Since the days of shamen and caves, storytellers have been an integral part of our lives. Stories are what set companies apart. Visitors remember stories and it’s what brings them back to your business again and again. When creating your website, make it a story. Share the history of your property. Share your story. Share some of the visitors stories. No matter what, be authentic and true to your business. With the new ResNexus websites there are two main focuses to use in telling your story. Some templates are more image focused and others are text focused. Which template you use will influence what kind of focus your website should have. However, all websites should incorporate both of these storytelling elements. Image Focused: They say, “A picture is worth a thousand words.” Images resonate and stick with people longer than text. People retain 80% of what they see compared to 20% of what they read. Use your photos to show guests what kind of experience they can expect when staying with you. Use them to tell your story, share with them the successes and the failures. For our how to guide on taking better photos please click here. The key to having great photos on your website is to practice and experiment. If at first your photos don’t succeed, try again. Switch up the angles and lighting. Don’t be afraid of making mistakes. What kind of property you have will change what kind of story you will tell with these photos. If you just opened a new place, show some photos of the construction—of your journey to open the property. If you own a historical property try finding some old photos. Visitors will enjoy seeing how the house looked in the past and it helps builds a connection with the home. When using photos to tell a story, try to make the pictures flow. If you have a slideshow of images don’t just place them in a random order and be done. Try to make the photos flow into the next one. Example: If you start with an exterior photo the next one could be an image taken when entering the front door, a natural progression. Add a lot of photos. Tripadvisor found that visitors are 150% more engaged when a listing has 20+ photos. Now if a small listing has that many images shouldn’t your website have more? Text Focused: Though images are a very effective way to tell your story, they also leave gaps. This is where a text focused website shines. With text you can tell your story exactly how it is. How often have we heard, “the book is so much better than the movie.” Text allows us to put in more detail and senses. Make sure to use this to your advantage. When writing, try to connect to the emotional side of your audience’s brain. People trust their gut and emotions, so if you’re able to touch on those emotions you can help them in their decision making. Note: One of the most difficult parts of photographing a room is making sure the room size appears accurate. To avoid this, use a wide angle lense to gain space and try to take the photo through a doorway. Don’t talk at your audience. Talk with them. They don’t want to hear about how successful you’ve been, they want to hear about your past. Why tell them about your history? Because most people what to be a part of the story. Don’t be long winded. Tell your story, but don’t put them to sleep. Keep it a reasonable length so they’ll actually take the time to read it all.
